In early 1800's, a group of Spanish military troops were ordered to stay at an abandoned chapel. The fort was surrounded by cottonwood trees so they wanted to name their new fort "El Alamo." Later on Mexico took over the Alamo for they're success in the war of independence from Spain in 1820's. In the early stages of the Texas' war of independence in December 1835 with Mexico, a group of Texans volunteers that were led by George Collinsworth  and Benjamin Milam, had taken over the fort. In the middle of February 1836, James Bowie and William B. Travis now had the control of the Texan forces. Sam Houston in the other hand, a newly appointed chief, had argued that the fort should be abandoned because there were an insufficient amount of troops, but the troops were ready to defend the fort till its last. In February 23rd General Antonio Santa Anna, had about 6,000 compromising the fort, but they didn't break through until March 6th. They killed everyone but two people who are Susannah Dickson and her daughter Angelina. The Mexican finally got their fort back from March to May, and for the Texans the Battle of the Alamo was a heroic act for resistance, and their battle for independence. In April 21 1836, Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna and shouted "Remember the Alamo!" as they attacked.
